Shine on Harvest Moon...

This year, the Harvest Moon came last night, the night of October 3-4. Did you see it? Well, I saw it this morning. Maybe you saw it last night. It was beautiful!

The shorter than usual time between moonrises around harvest Moon time means there is no long period of darkness between sunset and moonrise. In the days before tractor lights, the light of the autumn full moon helped farmers bringing in their crops. As the sun's light faded in the west, the full moon would rise in the east to illuminate the fields for several more hours of work. http://www.earthsky.org/ . Then comes the Hunter's Moon which is the first full moon after the harvest moon. The Hunter's Moon is so named because plenty of moonlight is ideal for hunters shooting migrating birds in Northern Europe. The name is also said to have been used by Native Americans as they tracked and killed their prey by autumn moonlight, stockpiling food for the winter ahead. http://www.wikipedia.org/ .
